Guide for Final Research Paper

Due Date: June 10th, Tuesday at the latest by 5 PM (No Exceptions!)

Location: My office in building 24E, Room 1211 F. I plan to be there from about 3-5 pm. If you come before then, please drop it off in a box in front of my office and I will collect it at 5.

Page Length: 6-8 pages

Documentation: All in-text citations and Works cited pages must be in MLA format. (Please refer to chapter 9 for more detailed instructions, and make sure you are using the appropriate format for each text- i.e. scholarly journal, book, online editorial, film clips, etc)

• 1-inch margin on all four sides.
• Times New Roman 12-pt font or anything equivalent
• Double space
• Include your last name and page number on upper right hand corner.

Required

• Your actual paper (6-8 pages); can be divided into subsections with subheadings.
• Must include an interesting title that reflects the content and analysis of your paper
• Any visuals (i.e. image, graphs, visual data) must be documented correctly. If using an outside source, please be sure to credit the original source.
• A short “bio” constructing your research persona and developing your ethos for this project. (See chapter 3 for more on “bio” and persona)
• Any other relevant materials to further explicate and strengthen your rhetorical stance.
• Be sure to Proofread carefully to avoid careless grammatical/mechanical errors.

Some Tips

Universities take plagiarism very seriously because it is an unethical act that violates the rules of intellectual property- the notion that ideas belong to someone as a form of property. Considering the fact that scholars, researchers, writers and artists spend months, even years producing their work, such agreement of academic integrity should not surprise you.

Our course text Envision in Depth states, “identifying your sources thus becomes a writing strategy that you need to implement out of respect for those who have come before you. By acknowledging their names, ideas, and words, you contribute to a body of knowledge, graciously extending thanks to those who have paved the way. ” (236).

Notice I just quoted a passage from our text Envision by property citing the original source. If I had used above words as my own, I would have been guilty of plagiarism.

As you draft and finalize your research papers, be careful to avoid plagiarism at all costs. To do so, avoid procrastination and be sure to keep a research log of all your sources. Remember even unintentional plagiarism is considered to be a serious offense for college students. We will go over this in class on Tuesday June 3rd in a classroom exercise. Delivery, one of Five Canons of Rhetoric, provides an effective tool for argumentation. The following division of three  (3) branches of oratory was created by Classical rhetoricians (Aristotle, anyone? ) who taught people how to speak eloquently and persuasively. Remember this was a period before there were lawyers, meaning one had to defend his own rights by means of his speech and wit alone.  Perhaps rhetoric – effective argumentation – was the most powerful tool one can ever possess.

Three branches of Oratory

You will be reading the following two articles for next Tuesday’s class. One is a speech made by Presidential Candidate Obama called “A More Perfect Union,” which has been widely praised by critics and mainstream audience alike.

Please download, print, and bring the speech to class on Tuesday. You will NOT be able to print these out during class period, so be sure to have a copy available.

Remember, you can use one or two visuals (depending on the content of your visual) or use one visual with one written text- both on similar issue. You can also take a comparative  approach by reading two visuals in relation to one another.

Description

Your first assignment is a 3-5 page rhetorical analysis on a visual text that conveys an argument (don’t just pick a pretty or decorative picture- it will be difficult to fulfill this assignment). This can be anything visual from political cartoons to popular advertisements, a cover of a magazine or other forms of visual expression. Be creative.

Ideally, your choice of image(s) will initiate your focus for a research-based argument – pick either an issue that interests you or a medium that you’d like to examine critically.

Learning Goals

The goal of this rhetorical analysis is to help you develop visual literacy and unleash your abilities as a rhetorician. You are to both argue for a text’s persuasiveness and to be persuasive in doing so. In addition, the goal is to help you to implement methods of rhetorical analysis we’ve discussed thus far so you can develop expertise in rhetorical argumentation in preparation of the final project.

Process

Focus on HOW it works, not simply WHAT it conveys; discuss how the use of rhetorical appeal determine the effectiveness of the visual argument.

To successfully write this essay, you will need to discuss specific and concrete elements of the image as visual evidence , like the way we have done in class.

Here are some examples you may find useful:

An analysis of Apple advertisements and its implications in their marketing battle with intel.

Student Sample Analysis #2

An in-depth comparative analysis that focuses on the use of pathos in two poster ads for films about the holocaust.

As you read through these sample papers, you will realize that there is no single right way to write a rhetorical analysis and it is up to you to decide which approach you want to take. For example, if your visual text mainly uses pathos, focus on that element and elaborate on it by developing your ideas further (but don’t ignore other rhetorical ideas that are used). If there is a specific color or patterns of colors the visual uses, think about its implications and the ways it affectsor alter your reading of the text.

• To approach texts rhetorically means to ask questions about how the text conveys a persuasive message or argument, how the text addresses a specific audience, and how the writer operates within a specific context or rhetorical situation.

• rhetorical situation: the relationship between writer, text, and audience. Can you elaborate with specific examples? How and when does this relationship change?

• Understanding Visual Rhetoric: “Writing” with images– visual rhetoric is another powerful form of persuasion that is most widely used in today’s society as seen through popular editorial/political cartoons. Below are some examples to get you started thinking about visual rhetoric.

Remember to look closely at each picture when you’re performing an analysis. Pay close attention to elements of composition, framing, shading, and layout, as well as the prescribed Audience for each piece. How might each cartoon be read differently by different audiences? How might it be interpreted in the US or in the Middle East (or democrats vs. republicans) as conveying a different persuasive message?
